The Difference Between Botox & Fillers

What to expect for each treatment

Oftentimes, these two services become synonymous in the way we think about them. However, the idea that these two treatments are the same is simply a myth! Although they are both treatments that are administered via injection, they have some significant differences in what they treat, how they treat it, and where exactly they can be used.

Botox

This is one of our customer and staff favorites. Botox is a neurotoxin used to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles in action. Administered by injection, this treatment is most commonly used along the glabella or the “11 sign” (between the eyebrows), the forehead, and the crows feet. All of these areas are susceptible to signs of aging.

For example, with age the eyebrows tend to drop and the upper eyelids can then appear lax and heavy. Botox is the perfect treatment to lift the lateral brow, smooth the crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Neurotoxins can also be used in the lower face, vertical lip lines, the angle of the mouth, at the chin and the neck bands.  The corners of the mouth can start to downturn in time—making it appear as if you’re frowning when you’re not! Botox is a great solution to fighting these natural effects of aging.

It’s also important to note that there are other forms of neurotoxins out there such as Dysport, Jeauveau, Xeomin, and the newest Daxxify.

Botox and fillers - what's the difference

What to Expect: Botox

At the appointment, Botox is applied through several injections. This is an outpatient procedure and does not require any significant downtime after the treatment. A typical Botox procedure is rather quick and usually involves some consultation first to establish your goals. The effects of Botox can be noticed within 7 days of treatment with full results occurring between 10-14 days after the treatment. The effects last up to 3 months, sometimes longer.

Dermal Fillers

When you think fillers, think youthful fat replacement. Where Botox is relaxing muscles, fillers are replacing (or filling) the gaps that fat, bone and muscle have been lost due to aging. This approach focuses on restoring fullness and structure back to your aesthetic and is administered via injection. Fillers are most commonly used in the cheeks, undereyes, temples, lips, the angle of the jaw, and the chin. The goal is volume replacement and lift in order to provide a more youthful overall appearance.

Fillers are used frequently in areas where there is significant loss of volume, making a tired or older appearance.  There are many brands of dermal fillers, but at Bloom we prefer the Juvéderm line, Restylane & Radiesse.  We encourage you to explore the product differences and what may be best for you with one of our expert providers.

What to Expect: Dermal Fillers

One of the best things about most dermal fillers is that the effects of treatment are noticeable immediately. It’s important to note that certain dermal fillers are biostimulating, not just filling.  Calcium hydroxylapatite, such as Radiesse, encourages your skin to create collagen and thus, elasticity.  If you use a stimulating filler, the results will become more noticeable over time. These treatments are performed in the office and do not require extensive healing time.

Again, fillers are administered via injections to the target areas we talked about above and are a great way to get a youthful fullness back into your face. You can expect little to minimal recovery time meaning you can enjoy the benefits of your look as soon as you walk out of our office! Even though fillers are different from neurotoxins like Botox, both treatments can be used together to address your concerns.

Cost

Neurotoxins are charged by the unit administered.  Prices usually can range from $240-$600 per visit, with results lasting about 3 months. Discussing your budget and expectations ahead of time with your provider is important to make a treatment plan you are happy about.

Dermal fillers have a wide range of pricing, usually $670-$850/syringe. The results last much longer than neurotoxins, approximately 12-14 months, sometimes longer.
